Pregnant onion plant
I was reading about air cleaning plants and I found an unusual plant from South Africa. This plant looks like a a huge green onion.
As I mentioned it is an air cleaner. And it lives forever. No really. . . It lives forever! Several articles I read suggested that you discuss with your family who would like to take care of the ‘onion’. Then put it in your will and testament. There were as many as 4 generations of a family that raised these plants.
They are poisonous and need to be placed in a high sunny place away from kids and pets. Other than that they are easy. The babies grow fast and live long.
The pregnant onion procreates runners out from the main plant. Called a sprout or a pup. The pups can be shared with other family members or friends. So they can start own family onion plant.
My two little indestructible pups arrived today. As quickly as possible I potted the two shoots. In a sunny window they should live forever! If you’re thinking of getting one of these plants order your pups on eBay. The plants I received are in great shape. They are bare rooted I moved them to moist soil in a small pot. Off we go!
